Asbestos is a substance commonly associated with properties built within the last 100 years. However, Shield Environmental Services has just completed a major asbestos survey of historic buildings owned by the National Trust. This leading specialist in the detection, management and removal of asbestos conducted a thorough search for the presence of the substance in a large number of the Trust’s much-visited properties in the South West. These included the Victorian country house Lanhydrock in Cornwall, and Caste Drogo in Devon. Shield also surveyed private dwellings on the various estates.

The work was conducted over a six-month period by a team of six Shield UKAS accredited asbestos surveyors. Along with a visual inspection of the premises, the team also took samples for laboratory analysis to confirm what forms of asbestos were present. The work played an important part in helping the National Trust comply with its duty of care as specified in the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.

Grahame Underwood, Shield’s senior surveyor on the project, said, “Shield has been working with the National Trust for over 25 years and we were very happy to continue the association by conducting this survey. As part of the work, it was definitely a privilege to have access to sections of these properties that are normally closed to the public. On more than one occasion our surveyors definitely felt the presence of some of the more ghostly residents reputed to occupy many of these fine old buildings.”

Chris Turner, regional building technician at the National Trust, commented, “This is part of a region-wide survey which illustrates the extensive work that goes on behind the scenes to keep our properties safe and in excellent condition for visitors and occupants alike. It also shows our commitment to using local specialists to help the Trust with its work in the South West. Shield was able to successfully complete this very extensive survey on time and to budget, despite the many technical challenges presented by historic buildings.”

Shield Environmental Services Ltd provides a range of remediation and insulation services to commercial, industrial and domestic customers. In particular, Shield is a leader in both the detection and removal of asbestos, as well as providing asbestos training.
