 | | EUROPANELS MAKE SCHOOLS SAFE AND QUIET | | | Eurobond | | 06/10/2006 | | | The Sacred Heart Secondary School at Redcar and Boldon School, both near Newcastle, are typical of PFI and other schools being built across the UK. Although different in concept and design, both have been clad with Europanels manufactured by Eurobond.
Boldon School comprises three linked blocks. The 1050 pupil school reflects current teaching practice with five main year areas and linked open planning spaces; corridors have been eliminated. Here, the architects had to take into account the insurance implications and design to maximise loss prevention, particularly from fire. This required a Grade A panel for the cladding. Although another manufacturer's Grade B panel, with blown foam core, was cheaper it would have had to be brought up to the same fire resistant standard. This would have meant flashing internally and stitching which would have been difficult because of internal obstacles, such as stanchions, labour would have been costly and time was a premium. It was much simpler and more cost effective to use 900mm module Europanels which have inherent fire resistance because of the Rockwool mineral fibre core.
The sports and theatre facilities also used by the public which, together with the music rooms, meant it was important to provide higher than normal sound insulation. By using 125mm thick Europanel, the school has benefited from good sound insulation and increased thermal efficiency.
