Four innovative projects using Alumasc high performance roofing solutions have won first and second prizes at the 2006 Flat Roofing Alliance (FRA) Awards. The community green roof at North Harringay Primary School landed first prize in the category for Refurbishment - Best Project up to 1000 sq m; while the landscaped park at Woolwich Arsenal development won the category for Refurbishment - Best -Project over 1000 sq m. Two other Alumasc projects were awarded second prizes in the same categories; Mendip Green Junior School and The Royal Bank of Scotland HQ in Edinburgh.

North Harringay Primary School in London shows how a green roof can make an impact far beyond the immediate building. Speaking at the Awards ceremony held at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, FRA President, Sir Michael Latham, said this project was a 'perfect example of the construction industry changing and beginning to work from an environmental perspective.'

The FRA judges also praised the project for its 'innovation, involvement of the local community and commitment to environmental issues.'

Opened in 2005, the project involved the creation of a garden on the roof of the school gymnasium and is a classic case of how the footprint of a structure can be given back to the community. Alumasc supplied the Derbigum waterproofing and green roof technology used on the project, with advice and technical support from initial consultation through to implementation.

The FRA large refurbishment category was awarded to the Woolwich Arsenal development where a 5000 sq m landscaped park was created above a ground level car park. Alumasc supplied a Hydrotech structural waterproofing system and a ZinCo green roof system. Sir Michael Latham and the judges praised the project as it 'showed a clear understanding of client requirements and had incorporated a green solution into the creation of an impressive amenity space.'

In any green roof, the correct system build-up is vital, with the basic structure comprising a root barrier and waterproofing, moisture mat, drainage element, filter membrane and planting medium. High performance waterproofing such as Alumasc Hydrotech or Derbigum is essential to provide site robustness and system longevity. Through ZinCo Systems, Alumasc has been providing green roof technology in the UK for over 15 years and has made a major investment into green roof research and development. Its green roofs are designed to maximize direct benefits to the building owners and users while preserving payback.
