 | | A-PLANT SUPPLIES NEW MODULAR SCHOOL DORMITORY FOR CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL CHOIR | | | A-Plant | | 06/08/2007 | | | At St Edmund’s School in Canterbury, a new single storey, 10-bay modular dormitory unit supplied by A-Plant’s Modular Accommodation division forms the new temporary home during term time for the 28 boys of the Canterbury Cathedral Choir, all of whom are pupils at the school. The choir boys will be boarding in the modular building hired from A-Plant for two years whilst their normal accommodation, the beautiful Choir House in the Cathedral Precincts, is refurbished.
The A-Plant modular building provides six-bed dormitories for the boys, who are aged from 8-13 years old with four or five in each year group. The new block has shower and washroom facilities, a TV and Games room and a kitchen/dining area. It also has an office and bedroom for the Matron and a further en-suite bedroom for the resident tutor.
Mary Stannard, Bursar at St Edmunds School, said: “We were granted planning permission for only two years, so the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the modular accommodation we have hired from A-Plant has been the ideal solution.”
The A-Plant modular building was delivered to site just two months after planning permission was granted. It is sited at the back of the school grounds next to a property recently renovated by the school to house the Choir’s Housemaster and his family.
“A-Plant was superb in the way it dealt with our urgent need for the new dormitory. The company met our requirements calmly and even helped to make changes to the groundworks for the building when it was installed,” said Mary Stannard.
The St Edmund’s order was coordinated by A-Plant’s Neale Charlton-Jones, UK National Manager – Modular Accommodation. He said: “Modular build has the speed and flexibility to meet situations like this and has become a well-accepted construction method in the educational sector.”
Offering spectacular views of the Cathedral and City from its prominent position on St Thomas’ Hill above Canterbury, the origins of St Edmund’s School and its close ties with the Church of England date back to 1749, when it was founded as the Clergy Orphan School.
Junior School and Senior School share the same magnificent 25 hectare campus, offering a seamless yet clearly defined progression from the Nursery and Pre-prep through to the A level years. Pupils may enter St Edmund's at any age or may progress smoothly right through the School, enjoying a total education from 3 to 18.
Normally on weekdays, the boys in the Choir are bussed from the Choir House to spend their days at the school. After the school day has ended they return to the Precincts for tea, choir practice, and Evensong at 5.30 p.m. They sing at services on six days a week and they are involved in regular national and civic events, especially when the Archbishop has distinguished guests. Recitals and overseas tours also form part of the repertoire of the choir.
