 | | LAKESMERE TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT THE 02 ARENA | | | Lakesmere | | 01/08/2007 | | | National building envelope specialists Lakesmere has put in another winning performance following the successfully completion of cladding works at the new 02 Arena.
Following the company’s appointment to complete cladding works on the new arena, which is the centrepiece of a multi-million pound scheme to regenerate the Millennium Dome and surrounding areas, main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine conducted a post-project Key Performance Report on Lakesmere. Looking at five core areas including design, quality, health and safety and supervision, Lakesmere was awarded a consistently high rating of ‘very good’, with average scores between 71% and 90%. The company’s highest score was for its design expertise, which at 95% was rated as ‘excellent’ by the project team at Sir Robert McAlpine.
The challenging project saw Lakesmere install the ‘back of bowl’ cladding using the innovative new Kalzip XT system. The XT sheets were installed horizontally and, along with standard Kalzip sheets and steel substructure, were designed to create a complex yet visually impressive graduating ‘corkscrew twist’ effect where the pitch of the sheets changed by 22º over a length of approximately 45 metres.
Located within the existing fabric structure of the Millennium Dome, Lakesmere’s work area was extremely restricted and so effective communication with main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and other members of the project team was vital to its success.
The new 02 Arena is only the second UK project to feature the new Kalzip XT system following the recent completion of the new grandstand development at Aintree Racecourse, where Lakesmere was also the specialist contractor. | |
