TURNING THE DESERT GREEN
Terram Ltd
13/07/2007
A new product from the geosynthetics company Terram is already helping to solve some distinct landscaping problems in the Middle East.
The new material, Terram Salt Barrier, is a composite geotextile and is specifically designed to block the upward capillary flow of salt from saline ground water, protecting the soil above from impurities and so allowing the natural growth of grass, plants and trees within the landscape.
Salt Barrier has been successfully used on a number of projects in the Middle East, notably the Palm Jumairah Island in Dubai where the product has permitted ‘greening’ of the desert landscape. It has also been of great benefit for laying beneath paved areas to prevent the paved surface from being spoilt by salt staining which can happen in a matter of weeks. Additionally, in the UK, parts of the railway industry have also successfully used the product for preventing frost heave in PVA embankments.
