New Larchwood, designed by Archadia Chartered Architects, is one of three UK older persons housing schemes to win a 'very high design' award from the Wel-hops pan European project aimed at promoting Independent living and improved housing conditions.

Wel-hops has examined more than forty older persons housing schemes across a range of EU member states and is recognising the twelve that it considers as representing amongst the very best in design. Three of these are in the U.K. and nearly all the U.K. schemes assessed were rated very favourably by the visiting members of the project.

Wel-hops comments on New Larchwood were that it incorporated 'good practice from a variety of sources, such as a cinema and integrated community services'.

The award will be presented at New Larchwood on 24th January.

Patrick Manwell of Archadia comments: 'For some years I have personally taken an interest in and researched design for the elderly in other parts of Europe and it is very rewarding to know not only that Archadia's efforts are being so well recognised, but that practice here in the U.K. compares favourably with that in other European countries.'
