 | | A-PLANT AND WH MALCOLM JOIN FORCES TO COME TO THE AID OF RWANDA ORPHANS | | | A-Plant | | 20/06/2007 | | | Leading hire company, A-Plant, has joined forces with major contractor WH Malcolm Construction Services, and a host of A-Plant's suppliers, to come to the aid of hundreds of orphans in Rwanda who are seeking to develop their skills to provide a means of supporting their families.
A-Plant was invited by WH Malcolm Construction Services to become involved in an initiative to support the Rwanda Orphans Project, which helps around 500 orphans in Rwanda's capital, Kigali. The AIDS epidemic has hugely impacted on the number of orphans in Rwanda and the Rwanda Orphans Project has developed a vocational training centre to help provide skills in carpentry, metalwork, plumbing, welding and electrics. A-Plant and WH Malcolm Construction Services organised the shipment of a huge range of tools and equipment for the Rwanda Orphans Project.
The equipment, which includes sanders, saws, drills, generators, angle grinders, welding equipment, clamps, pipe cutters, workwear and personal protective equipment, will be used by orphans aged 17-19 years to enable them to develop a skill for the future to support themselves and their families. A-Plant has provided a range of equipment, along with suppliers including City Electrical Factors, Dennes, GenSet, Greenham, Hilti, JSP, LSUK, Makita, Miller, Price Tools, Seddons (Plant & Engineers) Ltd and Wacker.
WH Malcolm Construction Services acts as a one-stop contractor for civil engineering and groundwork services throughout central Scotland and A-Plant initially became involved in this initiative when Scott Graham, General Manager of one of A-Plant's Glasgow depots, was approached by WH Malcolm to assist with efforts to help the Rwanda Orphans Project. Together with WH Malcolm, Scott Graham and Paul Fereday, Managing Director of A-Plant's Plant and Tool Hire Division, were instrumental in getting the initiative off the ground.
The equipment has been dispatched in an A-Plant accommodation unit which is currently being transported on a vessel due to arrive in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, in the middle of February. It will then be transported overland to the vocational training centre in Kigali. The equipment will be used to manufacture products suitable for furnishing the homes of child headed households and to produce quality goods for the retail industry, re-investing the profits in the development of the training centre.
A-Plant's Marketing Director Asif Latief said: "For many of the orphans attending the vocational training centre is a life-changing process and we are delighted that A-Plant and our suppliers have been able to assist WH Malcolm Construction Services in helping to make a difference in the developing world by providing this equipment."
A-Plant, which has over 230 depots across Britain and more than 2,500 employees, offers a vast range of Plant, Tools and Specialist Equipment to hire - from large plant such as Dumpers, Excavators and Telehandlers, to smaller equipment including Air Tools, Gardening Equipment and Lifting and Safety Equipment, as well as Specialist Equipment including Powered Access Machines, Accommodation Units and Rail Equipment.
