Training provider, Gas Logic, is now offering a testing and purging assessment (TPCP1) for operatives who work on large high-pressure gas pipework. This assessment reflects the changes in the revised Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers' Utilisation Procedure (UP) document.

A major change to UP1 Edition 2 is that it introduces the requirement to carry out a strength test prior to a tightness test for all new gas pipework. This has been brought in to meet current European requirements. The purpose of the strength test is to ensure that the pipework will withstand a higher than normal pressure in the event of one of the pressure or flow controls failing.

The revised document also introduces one other significant change. The old edition only covered pipework up to a maximum working pressure of seven bar. The revised version now works up to a maximum pressure of 16 bar (equivalent to approximately 535ft of water).

'Testing and purging of large pressure gas pipework has become a speciality over recent years due to the complexity of the tests and equipment needed,' explained Peter Dayton, Gas Logic's director of training and assessment. 'If those carrying out these specialist activities are not familiar with the new requirement, it would be worth renewing their TPCP1 certificate earlier than normal to ensure they Sare totally up to date.'
