Old Woking, Surrey - Walsall Council has chosen the Symphony Suite of software from Aligned Assets to manage its newly cleansed and data matched Local Land and Property Gazetteer (LLPG) as part of its e-Government strategy. The LLPG will provide a common centrally managed listing of all land and property within the council area, which can then be shared by disparate IT systems across Council departments.

The council has periodically updated, matched and cleansed their LLPG but the data remained an under utilised information silo and was not maintained on a regular basis. A recent exercise to bring the LLPG back into line prompted a decision to manage it in real time rather than retrospectively. This would avoid the high cost of cleansing, merging and matching and ensure that other systems across the council would benefit from a single up to date address resource.

'It's one thing to create and maintain an LLPG but quite another to link it across an authority's business processes and systems,' said Angela Cooke IT Consultant at Walsall Council. 'We needed a Gazetteer Management System (GMS) that was both easy to use and would also allow us to share or transmit the address data to other critical council systems. These include Planning, Electoral Roll, Council Tax, Public Protection, Social Services, and CRM, in fact any system used by the council, which requires an address. We liked the Symphony iManage GMS as it is intuitive in use but it was the additional applications within the Symphony Suite which promised ease of integration with other systems that persuaded us to make this choice,' continued Angela Cooke.

Symphony boasts an intuitive and user-friendly map based interface making it popular with those that have GIS experience and is BS7666 accredited. It can also allow access to the central data from any device anywhere through web services. For many councils, Symphony is helping to deliver on the e-government promise that every citizen in England will be able to electronically access all council services outside standard working hours from submitting a planning application to the online checking of a Council Tax balance. Over 35 councils in Britain are now using the Symphony Suite of Gazetteer Management and systems integration tools.
