 | | ROCHDALE CITIZENS FIND THEIR SERVICES
| | | Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council | | 14/06/2006 | | | Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council is putting its services on line with iShareMaps, a web mapping solution supplied by Aligned Assets. The citizens of Rochdale will be able to find information about Council services and other facilities within the Borough simply by visiting the council's website.
'iShareMaps has enabled us to publish a lot of the Council's service information online for access through the Council's website,' said Vin Doyle, e-Government Officer for the Impact Partnership. 'This is an elegant solution with the mapping interface built in, making it easy to find out the exact location of a particular service or facility. Child Care data, for example, will be featured on the site and includes information about creches, play groups, council run and private nurseries, parent toddler groups, details of after school clubs and holiday play schemes; in fact everything a parent could possibly wish to know about local services. The site will eventually feature a whole range of useful information on Council Services and the Borough of Rochdale as a whole including leisure, community, planning and local democracy. It will also be possible for a member of the public to browse planning applications or to report a faulty streetlight to the Council,' continued Vin Doyle.
The Rochdale site will also provide a `My House' facility, a feature of iShareMaps, which makes it simple for an individual to find service information relating to where they live. Having typed in an address, the citizen is presented with a visual snap shot which includes a map indicating their property location. The page also provides details of local services and facilities for example, schools, re-cycling centres, libraries, leisure centres and other facilities along with the distance from the citizen's address.
iShareMaps is a ground breaking application that enables Local Authorities to introduce a mapping interface to their public facing websites enabling citizens to find out about services quickly. The solution uses pure HTML so no brower plug-in is required. Once the iShareMaps module has been installed configuration is simply a matter of choosing the maps, defining the service data and deciding on the functionality required.
