 | | HYDRO-BRAKE® HELPS REDUCE CSO RUN-OFF FOR DURHAM | | | Hydro International | | 01/11/2003 | | | When Northumbrian Water wished to upgrade two Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) located in the City of Durham, to meet discharge consents, they turned to Hydro International's Hydro-Brake® Flow Control to control the flow. Use of the Hydro-Brake® reduces discharge in times of heavy rainfall into the River Wear, attenuates the flow from the Durham sewer network and reduces the volume of storage required.
Surface water run off was adding to everyday dry weather flows in Durham City's sewerage network and this water was discharged through two CSOs located by the river walkway in the heart of the city. After rainfall, these CSOs had been discharging excess flows more regularly.
In a £900,000 project to reconfigure the local sewerage network and improve storage within the system by using the Hydro-Brake® Flow Control, Northumbrian Water is minimising the number of times the CSOs operate. In addition, the two CSO chambers are being upgraded with screening to improve the quality of any overflow and meet National Environmental Programme guidelines, set by the Environment Agency.
Being Northumbrian Water's preferred flow control device, a 289mm type CH Hydro-Brake® has been installed on the most downstream CSO, and is reducing continuation flow to a maximum discharge of 115 l/s, so that the Sewage Treatment Works are not overloaded and spill frequency is kept to a minimum.
The Hydro-Brake® Flow Control has an outlet 3-6 times larger than equivalent flow orifice plates and penstocks, which minimises the possibility of blocking and maintenance. Hydro-Brake® ensures a constant maximum flow of water, and achieves pass forward flow rates much nearer to its maximum design flow at lower heads than equivalent flow control technology.
