The 2006 AIS Contractors Awards comprised six categories - Interior Fit-Outs, Ceilings, Partitioning, Drywall Construction, Specialist Joinery and Operable Walls. Phil Hutchinson, joint managing director of design consultancy BDGworkfutures, judged the Interior Fit-Out finalists and presented all the awards on 13 June at the Association of Interior Specialists' lunch at The Dorchester attended by over 430 guests. Results are:
Interior Fit-Outs Category (sponsor - British Gypsum)
Large Contracts - Gold: MITIE Interiors Ltd for its fit-out at Deloitte & Touche HQ, Bristol. Interior Designer ttsp also received an award.
The judges' commented that the high attention to detail on this project was evident in a number of aspects, from the extensive joinery programme through to simple but all so important partitioning and casework details.
Highly commended: Wates Interiors Ltd for its contract at Hertz Europe, Uxbridge
Small Contracts - Gold: Work Inc Ltd for its reception fit-out at WestOne, Leeds.
Often the most challenging of clients, this reception lobby for developers Bruntwood was completed with a clear understanding of what is important to the customer. An excellent mix of well executed standard products and finishes, with bespoke elements.
Highly commended. Advanced Interior Solutions Ltd for its installation at Johnson Diversey Northampton.
Ceilings Category (sponsor - CPD Distribution plc)
Large Contracts - Gold: Stretch Ceilings (UK) Ltd for its contract at Medway University, Chatham. Architects RMJM also received an award.
The use of highly reflective white lacquer material and translucent material, with its backlighting properties, made this ceiling installation a major factor in the success of the overall scheme.
Highly commended. Eastledge Ltd for its ceiling at Stephenson College, Coalville.
Small Contracts - Gold: Bailey Johnson for its installation at Wm Morrison Supermarket Glasgow. 3D Architects also received an award.
The use of classic fibrous plaster and GRG is a design feature of this supermarket chain's stores. The judges commented that this installation would not look out of place in a major public building.
Highly commended. Stretch Ceilings (UK) Ltd for its innovative ceiling installation at Wren House, London.
Partitioning Category (sponsor - Tenon Partitions)
Large Contracts - Gold: Optima Partitioning Systems for its partitioning installation at Western Asset Management, London. Architect Gensler also received an award.
An absolutely outstanding project featuring an amazing wall of overlapping faceted full height frameless glazing. An exceptional entry and a most worthy Gold award winner.
Highly commended. WESTMINSTER for its partitioning at Cinvin, London.
Small Contracts - Gold: Optima Partitioning Systems for its installation at Cardinal Asset Management, London. Architect Hanson Cribb & Conseperate also received an award.
The landmark building (the 'Gherkin') demanded something special from the partitioning installation - and it certainly got it - a near perfect installation complementing the building brilliantly.
Highly commended. Crown Construction & Interiors Ltd for its partitioning contract at Alan Dick Europe Ltd, Newbury.
Drywall Construction (sponsor - Lafarge Plasterboard)
Gold: WESTMINSTER for its installation at Reckitt Benckiser, Slough. Interior Designer Claremont Group Interiors also received an award.
An intricate curved layout of great complexity, expertly executed to produce a truly outstanding result. An exceptional drywall installation.

Specialist Joinery Category (sponsor - AIS)
Gold: Thorpes of Great Glen Ltd for its contract at The Atrium, Uxbridge. Design Consultancy BDGworkfutures also received an award.
This highly colourful installation comprised functional joinery of excellent quality, in a wide range of finishes including veneer, laminate, paint, stainless steel and leather. A very worthy winner.
Highly commended. WESTMINSTER for its installation at Office in the City, London.
Operable Walls Category (sponsor - AIS)
Gold: Alco Beldan Ltd for its superb installation at Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel, London Interior Designers Rockwell Design and Ezra Attia also received an award.
This high quality installation provides the numerous permutations of space demanded by the client, allowing the hotel's ballroom to be divided into as many as 10 syndicate rooms. A superb installation.
Highly commended. Style Moveable Partition Specialists for its installation of stunning curved glass folding walls at Johnson & Johnson, Highly Wycombe.
