 | | UNIQUE VAPOUR AND THERMAL SEAL FOR LOFT VOIDS SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVES FIRE RATING
| | | Aico Ltd | | 17/10/2006 | | | Loftcap from Aico - a vapour and thermal seal for loft voids designed to overcome thermal and vapour transmission to loft voids after the fitting of downlights into a ceiling - has been successfully fire tested to BS 476: Pt.21.
The successful fire test was carried out by the independent body Chiltern International Fire in a one hour plasterboard and timber ceiling construction and Loftcap achieved in excess of 60 minutes duration when tested to BS 476: Part 21.
Aico says that Loftcap is now totally unique in that it is the only product of its kind that provides a vapour and thermal seal as well as being fire rated.
This naturally provides a greater level of protection, cancelling out the fire hazard posed when penetrations are made in ceilings when downlights are installed and addressing potential liability issues therewith. It also allows the installer to meet the needs of both Building Regulations as well as NHBC and other insurers' requirements with a single cover.
Building Regulations Approved Document L calls for uninterrupted coverage of thermal insulation in loft spaces to minimise heat loss, while Building Regulations Approved Document C calls for a vapour seal between the living space and the loft space to prevent condensation forming on roof timbers and causing premature rotting. When a downlight is fitted into a ceiling and penetrates a loft space, heat loss and condensation can both occur. Loftcap is designed to be the answer.
Tested by the Lighting Association, Loftcaps are quick and simple to install and entirely maintenance free. Because they are lightweight (just 350g), they add no significant load on the ceiling but are rigid enough to allow loft insulation to be laid directly over them.
Manufactured from inert mineral fibres and organic binders, Loftcaps are specifically designed to resist the formation of any water droplets which could drip into the lamp and wiring. Their durable construction also means they are rot, corrosion and vermin resistant and are both non combustible and non-electrically conductive as a further safety measure. There is no danger of the lamp overheating as Loftcap maintains sufficient air space around the light fitting.
