 | | ANOTHER ARCHITECTURAL SUCCESS FOR AHEC | | | American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) | | 04/10/2006 | | | 'Wood in Contemporary Architecture' was the title of the American Hardwood Export Council's (AHEC) latest architectural seminar, held at the prestigious Triennale ('House of Architecture') in Milan. Joining AHEC on the programme were two of Europe's leading architectural practices, Carlos Ferrater from Spain and EEA from the Netherlands. A full house of 400 heard a series of presentations with wood, and in particular hardwoods, the common theme.
Introducing the event, chairman, Nicola Leonardi, editor of Plan magazine, referred to wood in architecture as a 'red hot topic' in Europe right now and confirmed a growing interest in wood within the architectural community in Italy - a view supported by AHEC's European Director, David Venables: 'There is not a strong tradition of using wood in building in Italy, even though they have one of the most comprehensive and sophisticated woodworking industries in the world. To attract so many architects to a wood event in Italy confirms attitudes are changing'. An initial evaluation carried out by AHEC confirms that most architects who attended the seminar have not been using American hardwoods, although many indicated they would be prepared to in the future. All delegates were supplied with a range of technical publications and sample swatches of the main US hardwood species.
David Venables provided an introduction to American hardwoods demonstrating their sustainability and suitability for architectural applications through a series of recent high profile European projects. EEA use wood in many of their projects for interiors, structural solutions and building facades. They outlined a number of current projects including two major developments, one in Milan and the other in St Petersburg in Russia. Alberto Penin, senior architect with Carlos Ferrater provided a case study of the Castellon Auditorium and other projects in Spain where US hardwoods, mainly maple, have been used.
