IWSc
04/10/2006

This year, the Institute of Wood Science's conference for architects, engineers, designers and wood specialists will ask the question of its speakers 'Why Wood?'

The conference will open with a case study of the Marine Institute in Galway from Ciaran O'Connor, Assistant Principal Architect at the Office of Public Works in Dublin. This newly built state of the art research and administration headquarters uses wood throughout, and the case study will include a panel discussion on the use of exterior & interior hardwoods and treated softwoods. The panel will comprise Sean O'Sullivan from Timbmet, Gordon Ewbank from Osmose and David Venables, European Director of the American Hardwood Export Council.

Two technical sessions will follow the case study. The first, based on 'Wood Fit for Purpose', will see Luke Hughes & Co expound on the 'Right Wood for the Job', followed by presentations on wood treatments and on sustainability. Ruth Nussbaum of Proforest, which is responsible for the government's CPET, will discuss 'Ensuring Sustainability - to certify or not?'

The afternoon technical session, 'Re-engineering Wood Performance', includes presentations on 'Timber Composites' by Gordon Cowley, 'Microwave Treatment of Timber - current research' by Peter Vinden from the University of Melbourne and 'Acetylation of Wood' by Callum Hill from the University of Bangor. The conference will also address the implications of any lack of knowledge and the opportunities for training in wood science.

This event takes place with the support of numerous organisations led by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), wood.for good and national timber distributor Timbmet - headquartered in Oxford. It is endorsed by TTJ and will be chaired by Ruth Slavid, author of Wood Architecture and Editor of AJ Specification, who says: 'Timber is no longer the sole preserve of the traditionalist, but has an important role to play in the contemporary world.'
