With entries now closed for the 2006 awards, a record has been declared. The new furniture category introduced this year has produced 70 entries and the remaining projects, entered in four categories, represent a record number since the awards were re-launched four years ago. 'This is extremely encouraging for The Wood Awards', say organisers Turnstone Communications on behalf of the twenty two sponsors.

Charles Trevor, Managing Director of wood. for good, said 'This proves that wood's renaissance is well established. Architects and designers are creating more and more beautiful buildings with this most sustainable of all building materials.' Speaking on behalf of the American Hardwood Export Council, European Director David Venables suggested that 'the continuing high level of entries every year demonstrates beyond any doubt that wood is now well established as a modern construction material'. The other major sponsors are the Forestry Commission and the Carpenter's Company.

The aim of The Wood Awards is to recognise and encourage outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in joinery and structures in wood, made in the UK. The shortlist will be unveiled at 100% Detail at Earls Court on 21st September and the winners announced on 18th October. Recent Gold Award winners have included Cullinan's Weald & Downland Gridshell, Hopkins's Norwich Cathedral Visitors Centre and Simon Conder's Pinion's Barn.
