 | | THERMAFLEECE INSTALLED IN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT | | | Thermafleece | | 05/10/2006 | | | Thermafleece, sheep's wool insulation manufactured by Cumbrian firm, Second Nature UK Ltd has been used for the first time within a volume house build. A thickness of 250 mm has been installed by the Millfold Group into the attics of new, but traditionally designed three storey street homes.
The scheme 'Upton One,' on the south west edge of Northampton town will be the first of its kind to be based upon a unique set of design codes devised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and supported by the Prince's Foundation and puts into practice the principles of traditional urban design and architecture with the needs of the people and their communities.
Paul Newman New Homes won the Design Codes Competition to build the first section of Upton, a scheme of 211 homes, by having a vision to provide distinctive design, traditional craftsmanship and the use of environmental building products. 'Upton One' has endeavoured to bring design and environmental sustainability to an exemplar standard. House prices will range from £120k to £350k, however 46 of the houses will be affordable and available for rent or buy a shared ownership scheme administered by Servite Housing.
Sue Cutts, Sales & Marketing Manager with Paul Newman New Homes said; 'It's like going back to the future. Combining traditional building materials which have been proven for centuries into individually designed, modern homes. We have only used timber from renewable sources, slate and clay tiles, and insulating with sheep's wool insulation was a natural choice to complement the other components. We want people to be part of a community, know their neighbour, look out for one another and create a real heart and soul.'
Penny Randell, from Second Nature UK said; 'We are delighted that environmentally friendly materials like Thermafleece are being incorporated into this housing development. It's this type of support from the partners involved in the scheme that will help us take sustainable building materials into the mainstream. Prospective buyers like the fact that their homes are going to be insulated with a natural material and can relate to the unique properties of wool.'
It's also the first opportunity for the Millfold Group, market leaders in energy efficiency to install Thermafleece. Colleen Rouse, Marketing Manager with Millfold adds: 'We were delighted to secure this contract and to be associated with installing an extremely efficient and natural insulating material. This high profile development on the outskirts of Northampton could help lead the way for other volume developers when specifying products to use on future developments.'
