The next phase of the ongoing renovation of the rediscovered early Victorian walled garden located in a remote area on the Isle of Wight, has just got underway. And, together with the assistance of Dorset based specialist surfacing systems and road safety materials manufacturer, Adbruf Limited, a further 150 square metres of pathway, including a striking Japanese Courtyard, are being transformed by the company's Adtex resin bonded aggregate surfacing system.

The historic site at Lake House, St. Lawrence in the Undercliff, nearVentnor, comprises a two-acre lake and a walled garden. It is part of 'Old Park' and situated within an area of outstanding natural beauty among dramatic cliffs that form a backdrop to the north and slope towards the island's coastline immediately to the south.

Over the years,'Old Park' has served as a private residence, an hotel and a tropical bird park. It is akin to a miniature 'Lost Garden of Heligan' in a magical seaside setting. The garden, separated from the mansion house, was abandoned and neglected until a few years ago, when Phillippa Lambert of Lake House Design became involved. She set about the task of re-establishing the grounds to their former glory.

This is the second time Adbruf has supplied Adtex resin bonded aggregate surfacing for upgrading the garden's pathways, which were originally reconstructed in concrete. The flexible, two-part, solvent free hybrid resin system, which is able to accept foot and vehicular trafficking, is used in conjunction with selected aggregates to produce tough, durable and a much more aesthetically pleasing finish than concrete.

Although particularly suited to such pathways, Adtex is also used to enhance roads, driveways and cycle paths on prestigious housing/ commercial developments and in conservation areas where harmony with the surrounding environment is important. The huge range of aggregate colours and shapes that can be used with the resin facilitates many potential design options. In comparison to epoxy based alternatives, it is quicker curing and less affected by extremes of temperature. It has greater flexibility, is less affected by embrittlement and less prone to de-bonding. It is also more moisture tolerant than typical polyurethanes, provides a longer open time and offers better low temperature flexibility.

Now almost fully restored to their former glory, the Lake House Gardens are open to schools, special needs groups and for charity fund raising events.
