Finnforest has supplied its ThermoWood® for the external cladding of Edgworth Cricket Club's new state of the art clubhouse. Specified by Rothwell Robinson the timber was selected for its remarkable low-maintenance characteristics demanded by the Sport England funding for the project.

Mike Robinson of Rothwell Robinson Ltd, who were the designers and builders of the clubhouse, selected ThermoWood in response to a brief from the cricket club to produce a structure that would require very little maintenance.

Mike explains: 'The club is run voluntarily, with members taking their spare time to perform routine maintenance tasks, therefore it was crucial that the products used on the structure required little time and attention beyond their initial installation.'

Originally considering a metal cladding, Mike had to find an alternative to fulfil the aesthetic demands of the brief, which stated that a clubhouse of traditional appearance and design was required. Timber clearly presented the answer but a timber product that would require none of the regular maintenance that regular softwoods generally command was also imperative.

Finnforest's ThermoWood presented the solution. ThermoWood is engineered from Finnish European Redwood and is produced by a process of intensive heat treatment - baking the wood at temperatures exceeding 200oC. The chemical changes in the timber that occur during the heating and drying process result in an altogether more stable product, that is superior in its resistance to the effects of moisture, insect and fungal decay. The resultant ThermoWood cladding embodies all the properties required for external applications such as protective cladding, but it is also ideal for decking and other landscaping applications.

Steve Simpson, a member of the Edgworth Cricket Club said: 'We are delighted with our new clubhouse. Its design fits well with the surroundings and the general expectation of a traditional clubhouse aesthetic, meanwhile the timber cladding has retained its deep colour and has not faded since the day it was installed. As low maintenance was a pre-condition of the funding award from Sport England, ThermoWood presented the perfect combination.'
