 | | PLANET PARTITIONING BRINGS LIGHT INTO THE CORE AT THE EDEN PROJECT | | | Planet Partitioning | | 07/11/2006 | | | Planet Partitioning, the UK's leading partitioning contractor, has supplied and fitted specialist atrium glazing to the latest structure built as part of the Eden Project in Cornwall. The £15m education centre, known as `The Core,' will play host to exhibitions, events and pioneering school programmes.
Overlooking a gallery below, the atrium glazed screening was angled and faceted requiring a high degree of design involvement in order to meet the stringent requirements of the building. The installation features full height glazed screens fixed directly to the underside of curved glulam beams. The screen design incorporates a specially manufactured L bracket, which is bolted to the beam and also slots into the post section surrounding the glazing. This telescopic head detail allows for any potential vertical movement of the beam without loading the glazing. The unit is demountable and features slimline vertical and horizontal sections for a minimal but striking appearance, which also meets all necessary performance criteria for soundproofing, fireproofing and insulation. The glazing forms the facades of a variety of offices and meeting rooms and brings borrowed light into the central core from outside, as well as providing stunning views down into the gallery below.
Devised by Jolyon Brewis and a team from Nicholas Grimshaw architects, the building is inspired by nature with a central trunk and floral-like canopied roof, the structure of which follows nature's own Fibonacci number sequence found in flower heads such as sunflowers.
Planet was appointed by main contractors McAlpine Joint Venture.
