The UK's largest independent powered access provider, The Platform Company, supplied two new Genie Z -135/70 machines to contractors Bovis Lend Lease to assist building work on the £146 million arena and conservation centre on the Kings Waterfront, Liverpool. The urban regeneration is set to be completed in 2008 when it will be opened as an integrated complex consisting of 10,000 seat arena and conference centre with auditorium and meeting rooms.

The two brand new Genie Z -135/70 machines were primarily used on site to assist UK structural steel company, Watson Steel erect the large steel skeleton frame of the arena. Before the project began on the popular waterside location the lengths of steel totalling over 230 tonnes in weight had to be transported through the streets of Liverpool and across Wapping Bridge where crawler cranes and booms worked alongside each other to put up the steel shell of the arena.

As the largest boom available in The Platform Company's Genie fleet the machines were ideal for the job at hand and carefully worked to lift and work around access limitations on site. Fitted with rough terrain wheels and powerful engines, they could manoeuvre up, out and over the obstacles on site to place the large steel girders together to prepare the structure for roof panels and pre-cast terracing. The steel frame was raised in an anti-clockwise direction and due to good weather the initial steel frame was finished on target and the next stage of steel work, on the eastern and western elevations is currently taking action.

Mark Davies, Construction Manager for Bovis Lend Lease says: 'Our biggest challenge at Liverpool is meeting deadlines and getting all machines working efficiently and safely simultaneously. The Platform Company assist our needs by providing top quality, versatile machinery that enables us to meet the demanding challenges that the project presents.'
