RD COMPLIANT CEILING IS COMPACT AND EASY TO INSTALL
Fermacell
13/11/2006
A new ceiling solution from Fermacell provides Robust Detail compliant acoustic performance in a compact and straightforward structure.
Developed in conjunction with Protektor, Fermacell's 2FCH22 system fits more than enough performance to meet the requirements of Part E of the Building Regulations into a floor and ceiling that is just 338mm deep. And because it uses Fermacell's 2E31 pre-laminated dry-screed flooring elements and Protektor's TPS 25 Acoustic Ceiling System it can be quickly and simply installed on site with no need for wet trades.
The 2E31 dry-screed floor consists of two overlapping layers of l0mm thick Fermacell board bonded to a single layer of l0mm thick wood fibre acoustic insulation. This is simply laid as a floating floor on top of a spanning layer of 22mm chipboard. A 2E31 floor can withstand point loads of 2.5 kN and provides up to 90 minutes resistance to the downward spread of flame. It is also moisture tolerant and will support partition walls without the need for special reinforcement. In kitchens and bathrooms the 2E31 floor element can be replaced with the mineral wool-backed 2E32 element for even greater moisture resistance.
The ceiling is supported below the beam using Protektor's TPS 25 acoustic ceiling system at 400mm centres and comprises two layers of l0mm thick Fermacell board.
The space above the ceiling is filled with a 100mm layer of 30 to 40 kg/m² Rockwool Flexi insulation.
Overall the complete 2FCH22 system gives airborne sound insulation of 58 dB (DnT,w + Ctr) and impact sound insulation of 56 dB (L'nTw) - easily meeting the performance requirements of Part E.
It is the combination of Fermacell's exceptional sound deadening properties with the Protektor TPS system's ability to reduce impact sound transmission that gives the system such a high level of performance in such a compact structure. Unlike plasterboard, which is made of aerated gypsum between layers of paper, Fermacell consists of a solid gypsum matrix reinforced with cellulose fibres. This gives it an outstanding capacity to absorb the energy of sound vibrations, as well as high strength and impact resistance.
It also provides the added benefits of moisture and fire resistance, as well as the ability to attach heavy items such as light fittings directly to the ceiling board.
Technical Manager Andy Richardson said, 'The acoustic properties of Fermacell mean that it can provide a practical solution to almost any Part E requirement that also gives considerable performance and thickness advantages over alternative materials. To make things even easier for the specifier and contractor we have developed Robust Detail compliant systems for a number of common applications.'
2FCH22 is just one construction in a range of new Robust Detail compliant ceiling solutions developed by Fermacell in conjunction with Protektor. The range also includes Robust Detail compliant systems for mass and pre-cast concrete floors.
Fermacell is a brand of Xella Dry Lining, a division of Xella, the international building materials manufacturer.
