SAFETY IS CLEAR AT YMCA

Residents at a YMCA have improved independence and safety through use of Marlon FSX polycarbonate sheet manufactured in the UK by Brett Martin.

The High Wycombe centre needed to expand its accommodation to meet increasing demand for safe, secure and affordable housing, and has spent £2m+ on a three-storey extension providing an additional 28 studio flats. Main contractor Leadbitter Construction commissioned Metalkraft to create an external stairway, to give individual access to each flat without residents having to use the main site reception.

To ensure residents remained safe when using the stairs, Metalkraft has fabricated and installed 17 infill panels, each measuring 1100mm x 1000mm, from 8mm thick clear Marlon FSX Longlife polycarbonate, supplied by the High Wycombe Service Centre of metals and plastics distributor Righton Ltd. Trevor Taylor of Metalkraft explained, 'Marlon polycarbonate was the obvious choice, it is excellent stuff. It is lighter in weight than glass, so requires less structural support. It lets maximum natural light through onto the stairs, and has an impact resistance of up to 200 times that of glass, so won't break or shatter into shards should anyone or anything knock against it. Should someone trip or drop something, or deliberately try to damage the stairs, the balustrade and panels remain intact and safe.'

Marlon FSX Longlife flat polycarbonate is manufactured in the UK by Brett Martin, the world's third largest manufacturer of polycarbonate, and of the largest range available in the UK from one production source. Class 1 fire rated, Marlon FSX Longlife features a co-extruded UV protective layer on both surfaces as an integral part of the sheet, cutting out 98% of potentially harmful UV radiation and helping prevent discolouration of the sheet when exposed to the elements for years (a common problem with inferior quality material). Available in clear, grey, bronze and opal tints, in sheet from 1220mm wide up to 6150mm, Marlon FSX Longlife weighs 3.6kg/m2. The material is also available in structured and corrugated options and is supplied through Brett Martin's national network of distributors.
