 | | CORAM SHOWER PODS HONOURED BY CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE | | | Coram Showers | | 03/12/2008 | | | Coram Showers Pods’ innovative shower pod designs have been specified as part of a major refurbishment of Cambridge’s oldest college, Peterhouse. The company’s 1,200mm Alcove and 950mm Quadrant Pod designs were selected for 24 ensuite bedrooms within the Grade II listed William Stone Building due to their ease of installation and high performance finish.
A specific challenge to the renovation project was the need to install a showering space, which maintains a high quality finish even with frequent, everyday use. Keith Stock, Clerk of Works at Peterhouse, explained: “Peterhouse prides itself on delivering an exceptional standard of accommodation to graduate and undergraduate students, as well as its conference delegates. This meant when it came to selecting a showering space, we required a solution that offers excellent durability and an attractive, aesthetically pleasing exterior.”
Providing the high standard required for the college’s ensuite bathrooms, designs in the Coram Shower Pods range are cleverly constructed from overlapping sections of glass-reinforced polymer (GRP). These simply slot together to create a rigid showering space that can endure rigorous treatment without bending or breaking. The pod’s manufacture from GRP also preserves its sleek, high shine finish for longer.
Keith added: “Crucially, Coram Shower Pods’ designs do not require re-tiling, re-grouting and re-sealing, which means our ongoing maintenance demands are significantly reduced. Also, because the sections of the pod overlap, there are no awkward gaps and dirt traps, making it easier for college staff to clean and keep in excellent condition.”
The innovative construction of the Coram Shower Pods range delivered further benefits for the college in terms of speed and ease of installation. As designs are supplied in sections, rather than as a single unit, it enabled the showers to be installed within the refurbishment project with minimal disruption.
The Coram Shower Pods range is also supplied with a thermostatic mixer and a specially designed mounting plate, which are pre-fitted in the factory. This allows the mixer to be easily connected to the hot and cold feeds using valve nuts. Due to these clever features, and ability to fully install the pod without tiling or sealant, designs can be fitted in about an hour.
Sarah Tanner, Architect at Bidwells, the company responsible for overseeing the renovation of the William Stone Building, commented: “As well as the speed and ease of installation, I was also impressed by the level of support and personal service offered by Coram Shower Pods. During the specification process, we were able to visit the shower pod production site. This meant we could see the comprehensive quality checks each component undergoes during manufacture, and be confident that we were selecting a solution of the highest standard.”
In addition to the 1,200mm Alcove and 950mm Quadrant Pod, the Coram Shower Pods range includes the 800mm and 900mm Alcove and 800mm Corner shower pod designs, all of which can be installed for left or right hand entry and operation. Furthermore, designs in the range feature a patent protected easy clean ‘Waterguard’, which eradicates leaks on the outer edges between the tray and the shower pod door. Confident in the leak free performance of its designs, Coram Shower Pods offer a Watertight Lifetime Guarantee.
