 | | KRONOSPAN INVESTS IN GOLD QUALITY | | | Kronospan Ltd | | 29/10/2008 | | | Kronospan has invested an additional £1m in processing technology at its Chirk site. The new equipment will further improve the quality of the company’s chipboard and ensure ease and accuracy of cutting. This investment also consolidates Kronospan’s commitment to sustainable solution and its position as the leading producer of high quality panel products.
The new processor ensures that all metallic contaminants are removed from the manufacturing process at an early stage, which is vital to achieve a precision finish when cutting. Originally created to support the gold mining industry, the processor was designed to separate gold sediment from the surrounding silt utilising a highly accurate sensor and air jet system. The technology has been adapted to extract any form of metal from the recycled wood fibre.
This investment is part of a two stage process introduced by Kronospan. In addition to the new technology, the company has been working closely with, and investing in, its suppliers of recycled fibre to improve their cleaning processes, ensuring that a ‘purer’ product arrives at the Chirk plant in the first instance.
This combined programme of investment has reinforced Kronospan’s commitment to sustainable practices and ensures the company can continue to use high volumes of recycled material to create the highest quality products.
The company currently uses 300,000 tonnes of waste wood each year within its products, most of which is packaging waste, which would otherwise have been sent to landfill. Once landfilled, waste decomposes releasing methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, for each tonne of wood that’s recycled, carbon emissions are reduced by 1.5 tonnes. This equates to reducing harmful emissions by 450,000 tonnes overall each year.
The cohesive programme of partnership and investment ensures the manufacture of a chipboard product which presents the best levels of cutability, minimising chipping and reducing tool wear. | |
