Anti-microbial coating used to create ceiling mural for theatre patients

26th September 2008 - Liquid Plastics, manufacturer of high performance coatings for hygiene control, has supplied its Sterisheen product for the creation of a ‘Palm-house Skylight’ in the new Day Case Unit of Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton. The hospital is a long-standing champion of Art in Healthcare, and required a ceiling mural to allow staff to monitor the good effects of decorative art and improved environment on the mood of patients undergoing day surgery.

Sterisheen is a tough, highly durable anti-microbial coating that had previously been applied to over 3,500m2 of the PFI hospital’s walls and ceilings by Johns of Nottingham – a member of Liquid Plastics’ Approved Hygiene Contractor Programme. Superior to ordinary paints, Sterisheen not only withstands repeated cleaning regimes but is also rapid drying and highly elastomeric – eliminating cracking or flaking. Its inherent ingredients prevent the growth of microorganisms on its surface, thus adding an extra line of defence in the battle against hospital acquired infections.

“I proposed the theatre ceiling title ‘Palm-house Skylight’ in the hope that having a happy scene to look at will improve the operating theatre experience for patients fully conscious and able to observe their surroundings,” comments Stephen Nicoll, Arts Co-ordinator, “Our expert muralist, Sarah Hocombe, would have normally worked in artists’ acrylic paint, however the hospital’s Infection Control advisors stipulated application of the anti-bacterial coating already in service – Liquid Plastics’ Sterisheen.”

The creation of the mural was done during weekends, working on an inverted plane with several different colours of Sterisheen. The ceiling now shows a view of palm leaves against a background of cumulus clouds with swallows, as viewed through an octagonal ‘skylight’. The patient-research study is also progressing well, with typical comments including “Wonderful, what a pleasant surprise” and “Counting the birds really helped reduce my anxiety.”
