The Panasonic systems were sourced through Climate Center, Wolseley’s specialist air conditioning business unit, and the design and installation carried out by W H Good Building Services in-house Air Conditioning Division as part of the complete £3million M&E project undertaken. Panasonic’s inverter controlled MX4 systems are regarded among the most reliable on the market, and range from 5hp to 54hp – providing 14kW to 147kW of cooling or 16kW to 170kW of heating.
The newly opened 361,000 sq.ft. distribution centre at Chorley is strategically placed to support Wolseley businesses in the North West. When fully operational, the £17 million facility, built on part of the former Royal Ordnance factory, will employ about 250 people. Five Panasonic VRF systems provide cooling and heating through 48 four-way cassettes to the admin and IT offices.
Panasonic MX4 VRF heat pump systems provide solutions from 5hp to 54hp, and include high COP options between 20hp and 36hp. The outdoor units are designed with a minimum footprint for easy installation in restricted rooftop sites, while still allowing ample space for air circulation and access for servicing. Units are 1,680mm high and 765mm deep, ranging in width from 635mm (5hp) and 930mm (8hp) to 3,720mm (54hp).
The larger systems can support up to 64 indoor units, which range from 0.8hp to 10hp in a choice of wall and ceiling models, console units, two- and four-way cassettes, and ducted types. Inverter controls enable Panasonic air conditioning units to match power output economically to cooling or heating requirements, using maximum power at start-up to achieve the desired temperature as quickly as possible, and then switching to the minimum power setting needed to maintain it.
Climate Center is the UK’s largest wholesaler and distributor of commercial refrigeration and air conditioning products. Trading Director Dean Fradgley says, “Climate Center and Panasonic have had a long trading partnership. The Panasonic VRF system was the right solution for this application. It is a showcase installation, demonstrating how successfully a manufacturer and a distributor can work together.”
The air conditioning system, along with the other M&E services, is now being managed by the facilities management operation of W H Good. David Sumner, Design & Build Director says, “We took great care in selecting advanced air conditioning and renewable energy systems, to create an impressive building that will remain cost-effective for ongoing operation and maintenance, with admirable credentials”.
Paul Taylor, European Technical Manager at Panasonic Air Conditioning, says VRF systems are finding growing markets in the newbuild and replacement sectors. “They offer ideal solutions for medium to large buildings, with the modular units allowing specifiers to match systems closely to buildings’ needs. The systems are designed to combine high output with energy efficiency over a long service life. All Panasonic VRF systems use environment-friendly R410A refrigerant and have hermetically sealed scroll compressors.”
Panasonic is a worldwide brand of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd, the world’s third largest electronics and electrical equipment company, with over 260,000 employees worldwide. | |
