T5 officially opened for business on March 14th 2008. It is an amazing, modern structure capable of handling 35M passengers a year.

The new departure forecourt needed to provide easy and safe access to the terminal, whilst providing an aesthetically pleasing focal point for passengers.

To reduce clutter and provided a clean, minimalistic solution BAA decided not to use columns. This meant mounting the lighting units onto the steel structure supporting the eye-catching, lightweight canopies that shelter the walkways.

BAA and their lighting consultants, Light Bureau, requested our services and we developed the bespoke ‘Heathrow T5 lantern’. These are mounted onto the steel frames at various heights, fitted with 35W HCI-T lamps. These provide a cool, clean white light ensuring excellent visibility when passengers are dropped off.

To achieve the desired lighting levels we used our ‘micro’ reflector which provides a road lighting photometric distribution. Finished in July 2007, this bespoke solution helps to create the perfect entry way into T5 at night.
