Multifamily Green Building Guidelines Now Available.

As environmental concerns have become a top priority in the public’s mind, owners, managers, developers, builders, and architects of multifamily buildings are realizing the ecological and economic advantages to greening their properties. With products, resources, and standards changing rapidly, two sources of new information are worth noting.

Build It Green, a professional non-profit membership organization to promote healthy, energy- and resource-efficient buildings in California, has recently published Multifamily Green Building Guidelines (2008 Edition). This comprehensive technical resource for new and modified green projects, though sometimes specific to California, has broad international appeal.

Originally released in 2004, the completely updated 2008 edition features:
• guidelines to determine appropriate strategies for specific projects and schedules,
• guidelines for incorporating green building requirements into project specifications,
• cost and benefit analyses,

• techniques and technologies,

• climate change impacts for specific green building measures,

• mixed-use planning and design strategies,

• acoustical design considerations,

• green cleaning guidelines, and

• profiles of multifamily green building projects.

Ashkin Writes Guidelines
Stephen Ashkin, who wrote the book’s guidelines on green cleaning, will also be appearing at the Multi-Housing World (MHW) 2008 Conference & Exhibition in Denver, Colorado. A leading advocate of sustainable cleaning practices and president of The Ashkin Group consulting firm, Ashkin will be among a panel of experts discussing “Save Operating Costs & Build Tenant Loyalty: Green Initiatives for Existing Assets” on September 18 at 2:00pm.

The 40th annual MHW conference, which runs from September 17-19 at the Colorado Convention Center, provides multifamily building professionals the latest information on new products, building methods, and business techniques, as well as opportunities to network with peers.

This year’s lecture series includes several sessions on such green topics as transit-oriented development, sustainable design, adaptive reuse, conserving energy, reducing water consumption, improving indoor air quality, and recycling, as well as green cleaning supplies, lighting, appliances, windows, kitchens and baths.
