An innovative company, based in Hertfordshire and known for their role in wind energy production has out performed hundreds of green businesses and been named a Semi Finalist in the prestigious 2008 Barclays Commercial Bank Green Leaders in Business Awards.

The Awards recognise those companies who are using pioneering processes or new sustainable technology, products or services to help beat climate change and, crucially, boost their own profits.

Green Leaders in Business was open to all UK and Irish companies, and has three separate categories – companies with a turnover below £1m; between £1m and £20m; and above £20m.

Renewable Energy Systems, competing in the large business category, is now one of four companies in this group hoping to be selected as a National Green Leader in Business.

Launched in 1982 as part of the Sir Robert McAlpine construction and engineering group, RES has played a central role in the development of wind energy production in the UK and abroad and is now involved in a range of renewable energy projects.

While continuing to invest in wind farm projects, the company is now also involved in biomass, solar photo-voltaic, solar thermal and ground source heating initiatives through a newly established Heat and Power division.

Leading by example, the company’s head office in Kings Langley uses a variety of renewable energy sources including a wind turbine, a solar thermal array, PhotoVoltaic generation from hybrid panels, a cooling system using natural ground water, 5 hectares of the energy crop Miscanthus and a biomass boiler for heating. The site, which was converted from an old, run down agricultural building into a state-of-the-art, near-zero carbon emission building, regularly hosts educational visits and open days to demonstrate the systems.

Now expanding internationally, with bases in France, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, RES continues to grow its commercial wind farm business, with increasing emphasis on offshore developments. At the same time, the Heat and Power division is developing a wide range of appropriate alternative energy solutions to suit the needs of UK commercial and domestic users.

Also increasing the company’s commitment to sustainable energy practices is a recently established specialist consultancy, Inbuilt, which offers whole system design solutions focussing on energy efficiency in the built environment.

Barclays Commercial Bank marketing director, Richard French, said: “We hope the success of RES will inspire other large companies to find innovative ways of doing business that will build a new economy which is both realistic and sustainable”.

(Company) is one of 25 companies battling it out to be named as one of 12 National Finalists, who will be invited to present to an expert judging panel, chaired by leading environmentalist Tom Burke, including The Carbon Trust, Bloomberg, and the WWF, who will decide the winners of the three business categories.

Barclays marketing director for Local Business, John Davis, said: “Green Leaders has highlighted the aspirational work of companies on a real mission to embrace a greener way of life.

Working in industries typically associated with waste and environmentally harmful practices, RES are responsible for revolutionising the way we think about saving our planet. It is a great achievement for RES to have reached the Semi Finalist phase and we wish them every success in the future”.

Winners will be revealed before an audience of 250 guests at a gala luncheon at the East Winter Gardens in London on Tuesday 9th September.

The event will also mark the launch of a limited edition book, spotlighting the pioneering accomplishments of all the winners and finalists.

Produced entirely from sustainable sources, it will be sent to government heads and influential figures around the world, showing how British business is leading the way in a new industrial revolution – one that promises to protect and preserve our planet.
