Milton Precast and QuickChange Moveable Barriers.

Sittingbourne based manufacturer Milton Precast was presented with the British Precast Federation Best Practice Award for Innovation (2008) at an awards ceremony held in Leicester on the 13th May. Managing Director Andy Goring received the award from BBC sports presenter Garry Richardson at the annual awards dinner on behalf of the company.

The QuickChange Moveable Barrier (QMB) system comprises a ‘chain’ of precast concrete barrier units, which will be used to manage traffic flow during construction, installation and repair works on Britain’s roads. The units are moved across the carriageway by a special Barrier Transfer Vehicle at speeds of up to 10 mph, enabling lane priority changes to be made quickly, especially during peak traffic periods

The award recognises the importance of the revolutionary new temporary barrier system for use in road projects throughout the UK, and comes at a time when the barriers are being installed on operation stack, the holding operation for freight traffic on the M20 in Kent.

Andy Goring says

“This is a well deserved recognition of the system which Milton Precast are proud to be involved with. It recognises the achievements of a long standing Kent company and its suppliers and partners in the project”

“We’re convinced that QMB will bring major benefits to both contractors and road users, in terms of safety, efficiency and improved traffic flows. By allowing rapid lane changes, even at peak times, QMB helps ensure that work is completed more quickly, safely and cost-effectively - and that’s got to be good news for everyone using, and paying for, Britain’s roads.”

Milton Precast is manufacturing the QMB units at its Sittingbourne facility using moulds supplied by its American client, Barrier Systems Inc. The complete system, including the Barrier Transfer Vehicle, will then be leased to The Highways Agency by another Kent company, Highway Care which is Barrier Systems exclusive distributor for the UK.

The system comprises a linked “chain” of reactive tension barrier units which can be raised slightly from the road surface and moved across the carriageway by a Transfer Vehicle allowing lane priority changes during road works and Traffic Tidal Flows.

The system allows better phasing of road works and more intensive construction as a result of more construction space being available, thus improving productivity and better utilisation of manpower and plant.

• Increases work area for contractor.

• Barrier can change lanes at up to 10mph several times per day.

• Construction or permanent applications.

• Very low barrier deflection.

• Allows increased traffic flows during peak periods, increased work area during off peak periods.

The company is known throughout the UK as a manufacturer of manhole components, Box culverts and other drainage products In recent years the company has moved to using the brand name Milton Precast to reflect the fact that it is involved in far more than just the concrete pipeline marketplace, and its involvement in the manufacture of these barriers sees a continuation of its move into other precast markets.
