Wolseley has announced major changes to waste services for its branches, including Plumb Center and Build Center, as part of an ongoing drive to increase recycling rates throughout the company.

The UK’s leading distributor of plumbing and heating products is halving the number of scheduled waste movements from branches to landfill sites.

Waste backhauling is already available to all Wolseley branches. Cardboard, clear plastic and good pallets are loaded onto vehicles returning from branches to the company’s distribution centres – eliminating the need for extra journeys to collect recyclables and the consequential increased CO2 emissions. At the distribution centres the collected materials are baled and recycled.

Wolseley’s environmental manager Sara Johnson said: “Reduction of waste going to landfill sites is a key focus of our environmental policy. Thanks to our unique distribution network we are able to use ‘reverse logistics’ to boost our recycling rates.

“We have reduced movements to landfill following extensive research into the waste profiles produced by our businesses, and are supporting the branch network with training and relevant communication tools, such as newsletters and posters.

“Our recycling levels are set to increase further following this cut in waste collections, and we are also looking to backhaul paper and coloured plastics waste in the near future.”
