A fast growing broadband and telecommunications services provider has upgraded the heating and cooling of its headquarters in central London to a highly efficient VRF heat recovery system from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The VRF system, serving six floors, economically allows different parts of the building simultaneously to operate in cooling or heating mode, with surplus heat from one providing useful energy for the other.
To replace an obsolete ‘legacy’ system with boiler, fan coil units, and chillers serving 14,000 sq ft of offices, M&E services contractor Capitol Engineering Services installed a total of 50 floor mounted chassis type fan coil units served by five roof top condensing units. Geoff Marchesi, Managing Director of The Capitol Group, says the earlier system had been both inefficient and unreliable. “The building now has a state of the art installation – the ‘broadband’ of air conditioning – which will ensure a comfortable working environment in all seasons.”
Using kit supplied by Mitsubishi HI distributor HRP Ltd, Capitol Engineering Services installed five 12hp (33.5kW) FDCA335 outdoor units. Each outdoor unit offers high performance VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) and supports an industry leading total pipe length of over half a kilometre, with a maximum pipe run of 160m to the furthest indoor unit, and up to 50m height difference between roof top outdoor unit and any indoor unit.
These are connected to 50 FDFUA45 (4.5kW) concealed floor standing indoor units through refrigerant flow branch controllers. The PFD controller permits free design of simultaneous heating and cooling of indoor units. Each unit or group of units connected to a PFD controller can operate in its individual mode, irrespective of the demands of other areas of the building. The PFD controller includes an additional solenoid valve and capillary designed to reduce refrigerant noise during mode change.
Capitol Engineering Services’ Projects Division undertakes air conditioning installation contracts related to the fit-out and refurbishment of offices, luxury apartments and retail stores. It also undertakes boiler room refurbishment and mechanical plant replacement.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is one of the largest of the 200 or so independent companies within the Mitsubishi community. Today, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd has 32,500 employees and annual sales of over £20 billion, ranging from air conditioning to aerospace, and from power systems to shipbuilding. In the UK, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries air conditioners are available through distributors HRP Ltd, 3D Air Sales Ltd and FM Air Conditioning Ltd | |
