For the many thousands of people who flock to our city centres every weekend, shopping has long since ceased to be a chore and has instead become one of the UK’s favourite leisure activities. Whether they plan to buy something specific, pick up an impulse bargain or just have a look at what’s new this week, shoppers expect their retail experience to reflect its 21st century status as a favourite pastime. For shopping centre developers that means creating high quality malls with electrical services to match.

The new Cabot Circus development, will bring an additional 1,000,000ft² of high calibre retail and leisure space to Bristol making it a European retail destination when it opens in Autumn 2008, bringing 100 new retail outlets to Bristol city centre. The scale of the project has presented numerous challenges for Building services contractor, MJN Colston, but the decision taken by consultants Hoare Lee to specify Cablofil steel wire cable tray for both power and data containment has assisted them to address the challenges within a challenging 30-week installation programme.

“The big advantage of using steel wire tray on this project was that it reduced installation times,” comments Rob Clifford, Project Manager from MJN Colston. “There was such a vast area to cover within a demanding schedule that maximising productivity was essential. That’s why Cablofil’s ease of use and versatility are so important.”

MJN Colston installed 20,000 metres of steel wire tray to contain landlord services and building management system cables. The contractor used pre manufactured brackets to install up to eight tiers of tray on top of each other. Clearly visible throughout the building, the multiple tier containment is suspended from the ceiling and has become a recognisable design feature.

“The lightweight nature of steel wire tray not only helped us move the Cablofil product around site more easily,” Rob continues, “The wire tray was also installed in tiers on the bracket system. That technique allows the required amount of containment to be installed within a more compact area. Allowing easier access for both installation and future maintenance”

Cablofil tray has also been used externally to contain the LV power cables used to feed the mechanical plant, roof top lighting and the external lighting control system. The size of cables installed on the wire cable tray has ranged from 4.0mm 4 core to 240mm 4 core.

“Being able to use a single product type for both applications made the logistics a lot more straightforward,” Rob adds. “Our installation team were able to carry out a consistent installation to a high standard and within a demanding timeframe”.
