Two different Kingspan Insulated Panels products have played an important role in the construction of a pioneering school. The high performance FIREsafe insulated panel systems helped to meet required standards and strict regulations during the building of St Thomas Primary School in Swansea.

Built by Carillion, the £5 million school is one of the first in Wales to incorporate such municipal features as a public library and community rooms. It is part of the Welsh Assembly’s plans to evolve education provision across the country.

With public projects, issues of economy, sustainability and fire safety are often important considerations. The combination of KS1000 ZIP Kingzip standing seam roof system for the low-pitched school roof and Kingspan Optimo ultra flat cladding panel system on the walls is providing a highly energy efficient external envelope, which could lead to long term financial savings. Both systems are LPCB approved offering a high standard of fire performance to insurer specifications.

Designed for installation on roofs where the roof slope after deflection is 1.5º or more or on curved roofs with a 125m radius, Kingzip offers superb weatherproofing and excellent thermal performance.

The standing seam system is available in lengths of up to 26 metres in aluminium or steel. A range of integrated accessories and ancillary components including fixing clips and rooflights are available to complete the system. Kingzip will soon be available with photovoltaic cells installed between the standing seams.

Kingspan Optimo is an aesthetically appealing composite wall panel which is manufactured using a BRE A-rated ECOsafe environmentally sustainable PIR core. The pre-engineered single-fix system ensures high levels of thermal performance and insulation continuity along with efficient installation. Its slim lines give building projects a visually striking and high performing external envelope.

Paul Tedstone, of the project’s cladding contractor DWT, says his company have a longstanding professional relationship with Kingspan and appreciate the product versatility and efficient installation.

Both Kingspan Optimo and Kingzip are LPCB approved, ensuring a FIREsafe performance.
