The new Luxo Ninety has been chosen for incorporation with the new Bench F system, which is the result of collaboration between leading office furniture manufacturers Kinnarps (UK) Limited and Arup, the global firm of designers, engineers and business consultants. Bench F adopts a completely new approach to bench systems, combining unique height-adjustment of individual desks with clean aesthetics and excellent eco-friendly credentials, whilst Ninety breaks new ground in task lighting. It’s light is supplied by a new type of highly efficient diode lighting system which produces maximum illumination whilst retaining extremely low energy consumption.

The Bench F concept came about when Arup was looking to refurbish its London headquarters campus. The company invited a number of major, international furniture companies to respond to a brief and, following a rigorous selection procedure; Kinnarps was chosen to partner Arup on the project. Kinnarps, in turn, chose Luxo’s Ninety for the task lighting on the Bench F, being impressed by its slim, graphic design, flexibility and performance.

Utilising 4 diodes of 1.5 W to provide up to 1280 Lux on the workspace, the Ninety has a specially designed table base which is spinnable around it’s own axis. Springs situated in the lower part of the arm make it easy to adjust the lamp in a way that puts the light exactly where it is needed to provide bright, glare-free work surface illumination. The angle of light distribution avoids computer screen reflections whilst minimising contrasts on the work surface to significantly reduce eyestrain, dry eyes and the risk of headaches.

The special construction of the arm enables the lamp head to be parallel to the work area at all times and can be adjusted to remain in the required position. By pressing the light switch the level of light is regulated up or down, providing more flexibility for the user. For the Bench F System, Ninety can also be attached to the desk via a clamp. For ease of incorporation into existing design themes, Luxo Ninety is available in white, black and grey and the lifespan of the diodes are estimated at 25 years with normal office use.

Unlike traditional benches, Bench F allows single segments of the bench to be raised and lowered according to user requirements… an advantage for ‘fixed’ individuals to work in a most ergonomic way and for hot-desking, where a variety of users will share the same desk during the working week. The design still allows for the system to function as a clear bench surface when required to, with the underframe set back for clear leg room along it’s whole length. So for the first time it offers the best of both worlds in terms of both physical and visual comfort.
