Celcon aircrete blocks have played a significant part in the conversion of an old waterworks at Lyme Park, Disley, near Manchester, into as a spectacular luxury home with high standards of insulation and many energy saving features.

The conversion was the brainchild of Danish architects Allan Ramussen and Tomas Bur Andersen, partners of Danish Vision in Knutsford, Cheshire. To bring the very best of Danish design, insulation and construction standards to the conversion, Thin-Jointed Celcon aircrete, which is the norm for construction in much of Northern Europe, was specified for all the walls required within the shell of the old waterworks. The aircrete internal walls also support the first floor. Thin-Jointed Celcon aircrete was both quicker and provided a higher level of insulation than dense aggregate blocks. It is also a much easier material to cut than aggregate blocks, so recesses for light switches and power points were created quickly and simply. With the addition of 100mm Rockwool insulation a U value of 0.27 W/m²K was achieved.

The original sandstone exterior of the old waterworks, which probably dates from the 1930s or 1940s, has been retained. Behind the façade Danish Vision has created a stunning luxury home covering two floors and a partial basement. There is a lounge, dining, TV and games room, master bedroom with ensuite shower and corner spa, four further bedrooms, nursery and nanny flat with its own kitchen and bathroom. The original roof lantern in the building has been retained and adapted to form part of a heat recovery system. There is a CCTV system, alarm and many gadgets. A tunnel leads to the garage and a separate building in the complex incorporates a home office with kitchen, shower and toilet.
