Ansell Lighting’s range of Galaxy luminaires has been utilised at the new showroom of Frosts Jaguar in Hove, West Sussex, to provide an effective lighting scheme that adds glamour and sparkle to this dealership’s range of prestige motor vehicles.

This state-of-the-art building is a major extension of the company’s existing showroom and has been built on the site of a former BP petrol station. As this glass fronted structure sits right on the roadside, overlooking the main Shoreham Road in Hove, it has established a very prominent position, giving exceptional visibility which helps to promote the high quality vehicle brands being marketed.

According to Frosts’ director, Mr Paul Grover, “This new extension, alongside the refurbishment of our existing showroom, has provided an impressive building from which we can showcase the Jaguar, Jeep, Chrysler and Lotus marques. Our substantial investment in this landmark building has been designed to take these franchises forward by presenting each of these prestigious marques in a very contemporary and eye catching way. And perhaps more importantly, the whole ambience of the building has enabled us to deliver a superior buying experience to every one of our customers.”

The way in which a showroom is lit can play a fundamental role in creating an environment in which customers can view every detail of the new vehicles, as well as creating a bright and pleasing environment in which members of staff can be invigorated so that they work more effectively.

The project’s electrical engineers, Murray Electrical Contracting Services (MECS) of Worthing, were on hand to help the client achieve their desired lighting scheme. According to Paul Murray, the proprietor of MECS, “This project was unusual as it is a mixed site and so no one franchisee could dictate what lights should be installed. In order to ensure that we were able to recommend the very best lighting solution for this client we spoke to Chris White at our electrical wholesalers Gardner and Scardifield of Lancing, who pointed us in the direction of Ansell Lighting. Their area representative Andy Cameron was extremely helpful and organized the design of an appropriate lighting scheme at Ansell Lighting Design office in Warrington.”

“Andy dealt with my enquiry very quickly and responded with his company’s proposal for Frosts’ showroom lighting installation. This scheme featured a selection of Ansell’s energy efficient display luminaries from their extensive product range.”

The proposed scheme was presented in a very professional format, including lighting calculations and a drawing which featured 3 dimensional images that gave a very accurate and precise visualization of the overall scheme. The quality of the design, along with the way in which the scheme was presented, added considerable value to our service, thereby projecting the overall professionalism of our operation. Also, as my client was able to obtain a very good impression of the finished project, we managed to avoid any misinterpretations of the brief, which would have caused unnecessary problems further down the line.”

The design of the glass fronted building is unique in this area as it gives an angle of vision right through the building, enabling viewers to clearly see each of the vehicle franchises. Due to the amount of glass that is used in the building there were a number of objectives that had to be taken into account when designing this lighting scheme. These included the client’s requirement to have a lighting level of 800 Lux at the bonnet and the need to be able to extinguish luminaries at the window area during times of bright sunlight, to reduce operating costs.

According to Ansell Lighting’s Lighting Design Manager, Paul Davidson, “The type of luminaire selected and their positioning had to take into account the variation of size and height of the various vehicles on show at any one time. Also, the lighting scheme had to reduce energy wastage by maximizing the benefits of the natural daylight that steams through the enormous glazed area of the building’s frontage.

“As energy efficiency was a major concern for this client I selected our Twin 42Watt PLT Galaxy luminaries, as these attractive, multi-functional downlights feature compact fluorescent lamps to minimize power consumption. The use of a fully faceted high purity aluminium reflector provided a high performance luminaire which offers maximum glare control. To comply with the latest requirements of the Building Regulations the fitting includes High Frequency control gear, as standard, to further reduce the amount of energy used to start and operate these luminaries.

The versatile and decorative Galaxy luminaries used in this application have been installed by the contractor with the option of selective switching which allows a number of the luminaires installed in the areas of the windows to be switched off during times of high natural daylight. This allows the client to retain a well illuminated showroom whilst also making significant savings in energy.”

The Galaxy luminaires are complemented with a number of Ansell recessed Metal Halide luminaries, which provide additional lighting and add sparkle to the vehicles being illuminated.

“We are very pleased with this new showroom”, said Paul Grover. “No one would ever know that it started off as a disused service station, as every detail has come out as planned and has totally transformed the site. The new lighting system is superb and sets off the cars to their best effect and doesn’t compromise the actual colour of the vehicle finishes. It is a really lovely environment to work in, as the space is constantly washed with natural light, whilst the accent lighting does its job superbly and pulls in the customers.”

Paul Murray concluded by saying,” I have been very impressed with these fittings and the whole lighting scheme works really well and everyone is extremely happy. The representatives from Jeep have been down to the site and are really thrilled with the lighting scheme.”
