 | | POLYPIPE CIVILS SUPPLIES BESPOKE MANHOLE SOLUTION FOR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT | | | Polypipe Civils | | 23/06/2008 | | | Polypipe Civils, the UK’s leading manufacturer of drainage, sewer and cable protection systems, has teamed up with CJL Construction to supply a bespoke manhole solution for a 400-home residential development by Persimmon in Weston-Super-Mare.
Working in conjunction with both CJL and Wessex Water, Polypipe Civils has supplied over 70 bespoke sealed manholes in 1200mm diameter for the foul water drainage scheme. Constructed off-site at Polypipe Civils’ Fabrications Department in Loughborough, each manhole has been designed to counter the poor ground conditions and high water table present on-site whilst reducing the potential for leakage and groundwater contamination.
The design developed by Polypipe Civils incorporates a pre-formed and pre-benched manhole with a complete shaft. The lack of joints within the manhole construction significantly reduces the number of potential leakage points within the structure – a benefit largely unavailable using traditional materials due to their construction and weight. Installed with a concrete bed and surround, each manhole is capable of resisting floatation caused by the high water table.
Robin Milliner, Senior Contracts Manager at CJL Construction comments:
“We’ve been working closely with Polypipe Civils on this project for over 2 years, so we’ve seen the designs and requirements of the product change significantly to meet the project requirements. Polypipe Civils’ capability to produce a bespoke product for a particularly demanding site and the off-site construction element of the manholes has certainly been a major benefit at the installation stage.”
“We’re very proud of our involvement in this project” adds Mark Rowden, Utilities Manager for Polypipe Civils. “The ground conditions and site requirements have made this project particularly challenging, but we’re delighted with the outcome. The Sewers for Adoption initiative has played a big part in the specification of our bespoke manhole product and is a strong example of the legislative drivers that manufacturers need to remain adaptable to. Through our on-going and close communication with CJL over the last 2 years we have been able to develop a bespoke product that meets the needs of this large-scale project.” | |
