 | | STATE-OF-THE-ART FAÇADE MIRRORS CENTURY-OLD MILL BUILDING | | | James and Taylor Ltd | | 19/06/2008 | | | Leading façade experts James & Taylor have given a 21st century face to an award-winning redevelopment that houses the world’s largest original working mill steam engine.
Trencherfield Mill, a 100-year old grade 2 listed mill building on Wigan Pier in Lancashire is the centrepiece of a mixed-use development that includes nearly 300 apartments, and office, retail and leisure space. The mill’s steam engine, disused since the 1960s, has been renovated to bring it back into working order as a unique visitor attraction.
Architects Inside Out Design asked James & Taylor to provide a cost effective and lightweight cladding solution for a new-build of 200 timber-framed residential apartments that would match the aesthetics of the existing mill, built from brick and terracotta.
In consultation with local planning and conservation officers, they chose Carea HDC, a mineral composite cladding material, in two specially created colours (Earth and Arkea Red), which referenced the colours and textures of the original Victorian materials around the mill and the Pier Quarter.
“Carea HDC was ideal for this project, offering an environmentally friendly, lightweight, low cost solution that is quick and easy to install,” says James & Taylor’s Regional Director Justin Price.
Rob Steward of Inside Out Design comments: “We called on James & Taylor for the Trencherfield redevelopment as they had a great track record on similar projects with us.
“The Carea HDC cladding material found favour with both developers and planners. The new development has been well-received as paying due respect to the past, while setting its sights towards a new and vibrant future. It will become the heart of future redevelopment of the quarter, which will include residential and business space, studios, cultural facilities, hotels and cafes, all sitting alongside canal-based marinas.”
James & Taylor supplied 4,000m2 Carea HDC for the project. Carea HDC is available in panel sizes up to 700x470mm and a range of colours that include contemporary metal and more traditional stone finishes.
Trencherfield Mill has already won several awards, including the Built in Quality award for housing and the conservation refurbishment section of the Urban Design award. | |
