A year ago Daikin launched Altherma, an industry leading air source heat pump heating and hot water solution designed for use in homes across the UK.

Altherma’s launch provides the ideal solution to combat ever increasing energy costs. In addition, Altherma is well positioned to meet the requirements of the latest building regulations, the Code for Sustainable Homes and local authority policies to include renewable technology in all new planning applications.

Altherma has heating capacities of between 5.75 and 16kW and is 3 to 5 times more energy efficient than traditional fossil fuel boilers.

Altherma produces hot water in a purpose designed stainless steel tank and the new optional Daikin solar kit allows this tank to be connected to most modern solar collectors. The kit incorporates special control software, which enables it to prioritise hot water production via the solar collector itself. If the solar collector is not able to provide sufficient energy, the system switches automatically to air source heat pump operation. This arrangement allows between 30% and 70% of the energy required for annual domestic hot water to come from a sustainable source (the sun) completely free of charge.

The Daikin solar kit comprises of a heat exchanger and an insulated circulator pump, which is mounted onto the existing 200 or 300 litre Altherma water tank, plus a printed circuit board (pcb) providing the necessary communication between the various elements within the system.

The Altherma air source heat pump system can provide all the heating and hot water needs for most types of homes even on the coldest days, something not often appreciated. Combined with the new optional solar kit, the system can optimise free renewable energy throughout the year.

The running costs of a solar heated domestic hot water system are low and the system requires minimal maintenance. The complete system takes up no more space than traditional heating and hot water installations.

Since launch, Altherma has proved to be of immense interest to UK housebuilders, local authorities and housing associations keen to adopt renewable energy strategies but who have been put off by the high installation costs of other systems such as ground source heat pumps. Altherma provides a genuine complete whole house solution that is backed up by Daikin UK and their extensive technical support resource.
