FOAMGLAS HELPS GAP GET BIGGER
FOAMGLAS
16/06/2008
A combination of excellent insulation and light weight properties, high strength and water resistance made Pittsburgh Corning’s FOAMGLAS the ideal material for the roof of the new GAP store at the Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth.
Designed by Leslie Jones Architects, the innovative retail extension adds a second storey to an existing single storey unit by building a lightweight metal structure on the flat roof of the centre. Shoppers will access the new retail areas via a staircase inside the store.
The roof of the extension comprises a 200mm (2 x 100) layer of FOAMGLAS Readyboard laid directly onto the metal deck, topped with a single-ply Sarnafil membrane that is bonded directly to the FOAMGLAS. The result is a very light flat roof construction that is strong enough to span the metal deck without the need for additional support. Around 1640 square metres (2 layers of board over an area of 830 square metres) of FOAMGLAS Readyboard were used on the flat roof of the extension. Additional board was used in the vertical plane behind the profiled metal cladding to allow the structure to achieve the required thermal performance.
The high strength to weight ratio of FOAMGLAS was ideal for this type of lightweight structure. Margot Whyte of Leslie Jones Architects commented:
“FOAMGLAS is a good product - both light and strong, and it also provides a second line of defence against water under the membrane.”
FOAMGLAS owes its thermal performance, strength and lightweight properties to its cellular structure and the fact that it is manufactured from recycled glass. It is completely inert, which also makes it non-combustible, and is totally impervious to water.
