 | | APPLYING MMC TO THE ROOFING ELEMENT | | | U-Roof Ltd | | 16/06/2008 | | | U-Roof Ltd are pleased to announce the launch of their new innovative offsite modular roofing system which has now successfully achieved accreditation by the Steel Construction Institute to NHBC guidelines. The system has been intensively developed and tested over a three year program, to ensure it specifically compliments Modern Methods of Construction whilst retaining the flexibility of more traditional methods.
Using a unique and patented section profile to provide the jointing elements for a roofing structure allows the ridges, hips and valleys to be prefabricated in controlled conditions and assembled on site using simple mechanical techniques. This combined with U-Roof’s J.I.T processes now allows a real alternative to traditional methods of roofing installation.
Standard panel sizes are recommended at 2.4m and the entire system is based on 600mm centres as and fixes to the wall plate of any structure as with a traditional roof. The system is suitable for connection to traditional block work, thin joint systems, concrete panels or timber and steel framed systems. This inbuilt versatility ensures that the use and benifits of MMC can be applied to existing structures for refurbishment or new builds in any sector.
The light weight prefabricated galvanised panels are transported to site in “toast rack” or “flat pack” forms without the need for packaging with the pre-punched and fabricated joist sections ready for installation in-situ at wall plate level or at low level using simple bolting techniques and standard equipment. When using the low level assembly method modules can be boarded internally and have an element of insulation, battening and tiling fitted prior to lifting into position. The in-situ method allows the roofing contractor to work on the roofing structure as normal without modification being made to the structure on site. Both approaches improve installation times and in the advent of adverse weather conditions the U-Roof structure is not compromised in any way.
The U-Roof system is lighter and stronger size for size than its timber comparison, and allows any roofing material to be installed using traditional or other methods i.e. concrete, clay, slate or steel tiles. The prefabricated panels can also be adapted to suit window or solar heating requirements ensuring accuracy of fit prior to lifting. The U-Roof system may at first appear very different to traditional methods, however the unique “hybrid truss” method and simple fixings allows site skills to be transferred with minimal retraining. As the fixing principles are the same throughout the structure complex shapes also dormers can be integrated effortlessly.
The warm roof solution using standard products gives a U-Value of 0.16 however as U-Roof System is capable of supporting insulation on the external and internal faces also between the roof joists this can be reduced further. By utilising the prefabrication tolerances, insulation sizes can be calculated and cut to suit prior to installation for seamless fitting. | |
