Brett Martin Daylight Systems has passed with flying colours its first regular audit for the Environmental Management System ISO 14001.

The company gained ISO 14001 status at its first attempt in June 2007 and since then its ever-increasing commitment to sustaining the environment has continued to win it brownie points.

The external auditor who performed the most recent assessment said it was “one of the most straight forward” he had carried out and that he was “scraping the barrel to even suggest areas for improvement.”

Such commitment has helped Brett Martin Daylight Systems reduce its risk level from medium to low for the Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) permit issued by Coventry City Council.

Among the environmental initiatives Brett Martin has put into practice at its factory in Coventry are replacing the timber pallet packaging of its factory-assembled insulated rooflights (FAIRs) with recycled ECOpac honeycombed cardboard.

This is not only easier for customers to dispose of but also reduces the amount of timber used every year by 500 tonnes. The company also re-uses inbound cardboard boxes to send out tapes and sealants.

Some 110 tonnes of landfill per year are also being saved by improving quality control procedures to reduce the amount of GRP waste created by the manufacturing process and recycling the film used in it.

Using formed rather than stock lengths of the steel underlap strips in its factory-assembled insulated rooflights (FAIRs) has also reduced the amount of waste steel by 28%, or 13.5 tonnes per year.

The environmental impact of transport has also been significantly improved by reducing waste vehicle movements on site by 33% and by upgrading the delivery truck fleet, which has better fuel consumption levels and less polluting engines. The amount of time spent with engines idling has also been dramatically reduced by 75%.

In addition, the company has reduced water usage by 30% and is also recycling chemical drums that used to go to landfill.

A comprehensive employee-training programme has raised awareness of environmental issues and the segregation of waste. Teams have also been trained to deal with spills containment.

Brett Martin maps energy usage across the site and has established an ongoing energy saving programme but its green activities don’t stop at Coventry - new insulating films have been introduced that improve the U-values of rooflights, enhancing the green credentials of not just the company but its specifiers and end users too.
