A pioneering company, based in London, known for their bespoke heating and cooling systems has been selected as one of the top 40 green business leaders in the 2008 Barclays Commercial Bank Green Leaders in Business Awards.

The Awards recognise those companies who are using ground-breaking processes or new sustainable technology products or services to help beat climate change and, crucially, boost their own profits.

Green Leaders in Business is open to all UK and Irish companies, and has three separate categories – companies with a turnover below £1m; between £1m and £20m; and above £20m.

Total Concept Ltd, competing in the medium business category, is now one of 40 companies hoping to be selected as a National Green Leader in Business.

Founded in 2004 by two experienced engineers with an interest in the environment, Total Concept Solutions Ltd provides bespoke Ground Source Geothermal heating and cooling systems for commercial and residential buildings.

The innovative solutions designed by Mark Glasspool and Simon Simmons harness the heat stored beneath the earth’s surface and maximise the efficiency of these natural resources to reduce the end user’s energy consumption by up to 45%.

Although other alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar and biomass, are being developed elsewhere, Mark and Simon believe geothermal solutions offer the most effective long-term energy savings. Moreover, being underground, their systems have no impact, aesthetically or structurally, on a building and, if incorporated in the development stages, remove the need for the kind of supporting structures used by other heating and cooling systems.

And, while initial capital costs are high, the long-term financial and environmental benefits make the investment very worthwhile.

Since its launch, the company has seen sure and steady growth, with turnover this year expected to reach £5 million. But this business measures success by more than just financial profit. In 2006 they claim to have saved half a million kilos of CO2, increasing to 3.2 million kilos next year, and that they see as their major achievement.

As interest in their technology increases, the company is expanding, with new offices opening in Bristol and Scotland. They continue to push forward with innovative technology and are currently developing a heat pump for residential use that will fit in a kitchen cupboard.

On a larger scale, they are investigating a new product from America which works in rivers, ponds and canals and are keen to explore the possibility of using the sea as a means of cooling and heating.

Barclays Commercial Bank marketing director, Richard French, said: “We believe Total Concepts Ltd is forward-thinking in the way they have found innovative solutions to doing business, which enables a new economy that is both realistic and sustainable.

“Barclays Commercial Bank is delighted to recognise the achievements of our nation’s Green Business Leaders who are putting the future of our planet at the top of their business agenda.”

If Total Concepts Ltd is chosen as one of 10 National Finalists, they will be invited to present to an expert judging panel, chaired by leading environmentalist Tom Burke, which includes The Carbon Trust, Bloomberg, and the WWF, who will decide the winners of the three business categories.

Barclays marketing director for Local Business, John Davis, said: “Green Leaders honours businesses such as Total Concepts Ltd who make a positive difference to our environment, while striving to make a profit at the same time.”

Winners will be announced at a gala luncheon for 250 guests in London this September.

The event will also mark the launch of a limited edition book, spotlighting the pioneering accomplishments of all the winners and finalists.

Produced entirely from sustainable sources, it will be sent to government heads and influential figures around the world, showing how British business is leading the way in a new industrial revolution – one that promises to protect and preserve our planet.

Barclays Commercial Bank has teamed up with key partners to develop an exclusive environmental proposition for its customers:
