 | | A HARD DAYS NIGHT FOR BRITISH GYPSUM | | | British Gypsum | | 09/06/2008 | | | British Gypsum plaster, ceilings and acoustic partitions are ‘Please Pleasing’ guests at the UK’s latest Beatles inspired attraction, the Hard Days Night Hotel, located in the heart of the group’s home city of Liverpool.
Opened to coincide with Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, the hotel has been constructed within the refurbished 19th century Central Buildings in the City’s old commercial district, just around the corner from the world-famous Cavern Club where the group first shot to fame.
Plastering & Building Contractors, P T Corkill, used British Gypsum systems to recreate many of the building’s original 1884 architectural features, including ornate plasterwork around the main staircase, as well as to ensure that the building satisfied the latest fire and acoustic standards.
In one of the hotel’s function suites, named after famous Beatles photographer Bill Zygmant, the architect’s vision of sweeping ‘s-shaped’ illuminated channels gouged deep into a traditional flat ceiling, was achieved using British Gypsum CasoLine MF ceiling components. The components were used to form the ceiling as a series of separate bulkheads, which were lined and shaped prior to finishing with Thistle Multi-Finish plaster to give the flawless flat surface required.
The fire escape was given a new fire-rated lining using the company’s market-leading ShaftWall system and throughout the building, the old brick external walls were lined using Gyproc ThermaLine boards on GypLyner UNIVERSAL, a metal frame wall lining system. The GypLyner system was also used to provide a new curved lining to the hotel’s sweeping staircase, complementing the distinctive plaster cast frames, which had to be reconstructed to match the original design.
Each of the hotel’s 110 Beatles inspired bedrooms was created using GypWall QUIET SF, a high performance single frame wall system that maximised the available space whilst ensuring compliance with the latest acoustic standards.
Complete with the inevitable Yellow Submarine jukebox and rare artwork and memorabilia from the group’s heyday in the 1960’s, the 4-star hotel offers fans and corporate visitors a choice of Beatles inspired accommodation, including the Lennon and McCartney suites located on the fifth and sixth floors. Whatever their budget, visitors to the hotel will enjoy a unique glimpse of a phenomenon that changed Liverpool, and the world of music, forever. | |
