Nationwide Access, a member of Lavendon Access Services, has invested in 20 new plant trailers supplied by specialist manufacturer, King Trailers of Market Harborough. As part of improving the infrastructure of its UK based transport operations, Lavendon Access Services approached King seeking a more flexible solution than a regular ‘off the shelf’ plant trailer would allow, for movement of their machinery between depot and customer sites.

The two companies worked together on the re-design of the GTS44/3, the most popular plant trailer in its class, to increase its usability in the key operational area of transporting powered access equipment. One important development is a new two stage neck design that now allows even the smallest of scissor lifts to be positioned on the swan neck, enabling more machines to be loaded to the correct delivery drop sequence, whilst remaining within gross and axle weight limitations.

This kind of partnership is a perfect example of how Lavendon are working to improve the infrastructure of the group; and forming a unity with customers and suppliers alike is something Iain Hayes, National Transport Manager for Nationwide Access is keen to continue: “Our suppliers are key to our success; working together to come up with a suitable solution, such as the re-design of the King GTS44/3 trailer is a perfect example of both companies offering versatility and flexibility to provide a reliable answer to a problem.”

Employee and public safety is of paramount importance to Lavendon and further development has allowed the inclusion of safety features such as extending rear lamp clusters at the base of the access ramps, and a rear overhead marker board, all to enhance rearward facing visibility during the critical load/unload process.

King and Lavendon also came up with a harmonisation and familiarisation programme. Each trailer is collected from King by its new driver, with the actual tractor unit to be used with that specific trailer. One of the King team will then perform a full harmonisation procedure, making sure that everything is matched to run perfectly together. Only when both parties are happy and the driver has successfully gone through a familiarisation process, will the trailer be put to work.

“The harmonisation and familiarisation programme is something we will definitely continue to follow; it’s through constant communication with companies such as Lavendon Access Services, that we continue to develop and understand our customer’s needs.” Commented Mark Carrington, Managing Director.
