 | | ISOVER STAFF ARE SAFE IN THE ENVIRONMENT | | | Saint-Gobain Isover UK | | 04/06/2008 | | | Insulation giant Saint-Gobain Isover has incorporated the environment for the first time in its annual health and safety awareness day at its plant in Runcorn, Cheshire.
More than 100 employees gathered at the plant to attend the intensive programme – the third annual international health and safety day but the first time the company has incorporated the environment in the proceedings, with almost half of the events covering this subject.
The 130 factory and field-based staff were split into groups of approximately 10 for five 50-minute exercises. These included a foot tour of the site to spot potential hazards that had been set up especially for the occasion, a tour of the site as passengers of Isover’s haulage contractor to demonstrate how difficult it sometimes is to see potential hazards from a truck cab, and a first aid demonstration.
The environment, and Isover’s ability to use 80% recycled product in its insulation which is in itself manufactured from silica sand – one of the world’s most abundant, naturally occurring materials – featured in more than two of the exercises.
Steve Richardson, environmental, health and safety manager for the site, led foot tours of the plant that looked specifically at this element of the company’s operations while site manager Jean-Philippe Destang presented the wider Saint-Gobain picture. Finally, all employees planted their own laurel bush on the site. | |
