As well as stating that all socket outlets should be protected by 30mA RCDs, the Regulations state that all circuits in rooms containing a fixed bath or shower should be protected by one or more 30mA RCDs. Similarly, unless earthed mechanical protection is in place, all cables that are buried beneath the plaster surface of a wall partition (at less than 50mm), and cables which are concealed in metal stud partitions, require protection by 30mA RCDs.
To avoid the inconvenience and danger that can be caused by a single fault, the Regulations also stipulate that installations should be divided up into separate circuits such as, for example, a lighting circuit. In addition, installations should be designed and arranged to prevent unwanted tripping of RCDs.
